Adult ADHD: You are Not Alone

Adults with ADHD

What is it Like Living with ADHD

Adults with ADHD

In the United States about 15 million adults have been diagnosed with ADHD which is about 6% of the adult population. There are probably many who have not been formally diagnosed so the number is probably much higher.

Many people do not want the stigma that comes with an adult with ADHD so they live with it and deal the best they can. I give them a lot of credit because it's not easy. It holds true that we never know what other's may be dealing with so keep this in mind when you find yourself in a situation where you are frustrated with others because you never know what someone else is dealing with and they may just be doing the best they can that day.

ADHD Medication

What is it Like Living with ADHD

Living with ADHD is a struggle and there are a number of medications which are prescribed. There is no cure but there is help. The medications are often debated but it's important that you do what is best for you.

The medications are frontal lobe stimulants which do offer some help with ADHD. There are side effects for some people but the benefits tend to outweigh the risks and the proper dosing and the correct medication is important.

The medications are not something that if you take more you have better results, in fact, you can have the opposite results and it can be dangerous.

It's different for everyone just like anything else but there are different types of ADHD so if you have some of the symptoms but have believed that you don't have it because you aren't "hyper" this does not mean you don't have it.

As an adult who has been diagnosed and I do take medication, I would describe living with ADHD as normal. There are days when the medication does not do anything, sometimes I question if I even took it. Those are the most difficult days because I have the expectation that I will be very productive but at the end of the day I have not accomplished much and feel frustrated.

I always knew I had it, back then it was ADD and I was able to deal with it but when I had a traumatic brain injury in 2014 I found that it was beyond difficult to even function on most days so I decided to go and get tested.

Things that May Help

Go to Bed with Positive Mindset

What is it Like Living with ADHD

I have found that it's important to focus on one thing at a time and not look at the big mountain of things that I have to get done. Focusing on one thing at a time is difficult and I have found that if I make a list in the order of priority, this helps. I will be honest that most days, I am doing at least 4 things at a time which is not something I recommend but it's just how I have to operate. Writing things down helps, especially when you realize that your forgot something, write it down. Do not trust that you will remember later.

Listening to different frequencies has been said to help but I have not found it useful for me but it's definitely worth trying if you are looking for options.

Caffeine helps, for me, it actually has the opposite effect that it has on most people. It helps me focus but with this, if I have too much, I find myself wanting to go to sleep.

Keeping my office and my desk clean helps tremendously. Most ADHD sufferers are known to be messy and have clutter, I am the opposite, I have to have my desk with very little on it and it has to be well organized and clean or I will not be able to focus.

I can only speak to what helps me and sleeping is always a challenge. I have always done better with less sleep than most but the sleeping part is almost always a struggle. It's important for me to have my tomorrow kind of outlined the night before so I know how much time I will have to accomplish the tasks I have. This is actually a very high priority for me.

If ADHD is Part of Who You Are

Embrace it Don't Fight it

People which ADHD have five gifts, creativity, emotional sensitivity, exuberance, interpersonal empathy, and nature intelligence.

Find the positive, you have gifts, things that make you special and focus on those things and don't allow the negative label be your focus.

Pay Attention to Things That Help

It's important that if you find what works well for you, write it down and make sure you implement it into your life. You don't need to justify it to anyone, these are positive things that help you be better.

Expectations

Goals are important but make sure you keep your expectations of yourself reasonable. Some days you may be laser focused and some days your brain may not even be able to get out of it's own way.  When you have a difficult day, don't focus on what you did not accomplish, focus on the fact that tomorrow is a new day and you will do your best.

Write Things Down

People with ADHD are typically multitaskers and often thrive in that place but also may have the habit of thinking that you will remember things and then poof, it's gone. Writing things out resonates differently in our brain so writing it out will provide a record of it, and may help you remember it.

I have found that for me, I send myself emails. It may sound stupid but it's actually better for me because I hate clutter so if I write it down I can almost promise I will throw it away, an email keeps a permanent record of the things I want to remember.

There Isn't a Cure but Things to try Which May Help

I understand the struggle and even after finally going through the testing for it, and being medicated, it remains a struggle because it is part of me.

Everyone is different but if you are struggling to accomplish the things you know you are capable of and it s bringing you down, start paying attention to the patterns. If there are things that do help you, write them down and if there are things that you notice make it worse, write those down too.

The key is to live your best life and there is no reason you cannot do this even with ADHD.

The most important thing is to understand that the roadblocks that ADHD put in the way, you can move them out of the way. There is a lot of information on things that people do to help and I suggest trying them, they may or may not offer relief but the key is doing something to help yourself. Surprisingly, just the active part of trying to work through the ADHD symptoms is actually building self worth and confidence which helps your mindset gravitate towards the positive.

It's important to keep a journal and I suggest doing it daily and this journal should be used only for the purpose of identifying things that pertain to your ADHD symptoms.

Negatives have Zero Value

This is important to remember in live and if you are prone to focusing on the negatives you need to teach yourself that negatives have no value and focusing on the negatives is wasting your precious time.
